Hush Puppies History - from Hushing the Hounds

Founded by Wolverine Worldwide in 1958, for practicing pigskin tanning to make gloves and other leather materials for US soldiers, the concept of casual shoe with pigskin, was introduced to the suburbs of the United States. Initially thought to accept the brand name, “Lasers”, the brand’s first sales manager, James Gaylord Muir, later changed it to “Hush Puppies”. The thought struck him as he was dining with a fellow colleague and the meal included the traditional item, "hush puppies". Upon hearing about the origin of the name, which he was told that the hush puppies were thrown at the hounds to hush their barking, Muir, realized it could be a great name for their product, as during those days, sore feet was vernacularly called “barking dogs”.In order to promote their products that were found to be comfortable on sore feet, the product was named “Hush Puppies”. By 1994, when the sales of the products were down, Wolverine thought of closing down the product. However Hush Puppies history saw a miracle with the origin of clubs and pubs in Manhattan during that period when many people started buying Hush Puppies collection.
