Retro Clothes – Reviving the Fashion from the Past

After the bulky Victorian era, fashion clothes started getting slimmer, svelte, practical, and undemanding with tight fits and sleek cuts dominating the fashion scene from the 1920s to the 1980s. The more casual trends included wearing sweatshirts, flared pants, and loose bright colored hippie shirts.

Retro Clothes - Tighter Fits and Bolder Prints

People looked for more comfortable apparels as compared to the constricted Victorian styles and even opted for sporty apparel like sweatshirts during the retro period. Skirts became shorter and dresses with close tight fits were some stylish retro clothes for women who also ventured into wearing sleeveless dresses and bikinis. Even men’s suits became slimmer with the more casual styles like trousers, jeans, sweaters, and t-shirts becoming popular. Bell bottoms became quite a trendsetter and were worn by both sexes; in fact unisex clothing trends emerged during this time. In the 1950s, children’s wear and maternity outfits also came into fashion. The hippie trends brought flares and loose fits into vogue during the 1960s while the disco fashion of seventies engendered even more brave styles of retro clothes for a woman with tight tube tops, stiletto heels, and miniskirts.

Retro Dress - Glam Look

Long but fitted dresses are matched up with accessories like gloves and hats were worn. An ideal ensemble would be a fitted low waist retro dress of knee length worn with a cloche hat. During the 1950s, dressing styles became more intrepid with tight pencil skirts and snug halter dresses that were paired with heels. In the 1980s, miniskirts became dominant and were teamed with tops that had shoulder pads. Loose granny dresses that had high necks and long sleeves were a fad and other noteworthy trends were: silk wrap dresses, kaftans, kimonos, maxis, etc. The glamorous cocktail retro dresses in silk, satin, organza, and tulle were absolutely suave and were worn with high heels and hand gloves.

Retro Outfits - Relaxed

Most of the retro outfits were unfussy as compared to their previous formal counterparts. Punk, hippie, and disco subcultures were the prime styles that influenced fashion. A good hippie retro outfit for men is bell bottom jeans with a loose tie and dye shirt while a look on lines of punk style would be skinnies worn with leather jackets and gelled back hair. With relaxed clothing trends for women becoming accepted, bell bottom with bright colorful shirts, a headband and sandals or flip fops were popular. An apt disco look is high waisted trousers worn with cropped tops and platforms with lots of glitter used on clothes and blended in makeup.
